Meet the company
Save the Children is one of the world’s largest and most respected nonprofit organizations, with a workforce of 24,000 staff operating in 115 countries. Their mission is to help children stay safe, healthy and keep learning.
The challenge: Protecting critical humanitarian efforts from email-based cyber threats
Cybersecurity is a top priority for Save the Children, where safeguarding systems and data is essential to support their global humanitarian operations. “In a nonprofit organization like ours, cybersecurity is not just a matter of protecting data - it’s a matter of protecting the lives of the vulnerable children and families we support around the world. A breach could have devastating real-world consequences,” says Gareth Packham, Director of Information Security & Data Protection at Save the Children International.

Operating in high-risk regions presents unique challenges
Operating in regions with political and economic instability, as well as facing physical and cyber threats, makes their systems and data prime targets for cyberattacks from a variety of threat actors. Save the Children faces the same cyber threats as any global organization - ransomware, phishing, Business Email Compromise (BEC), and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks - but also contends with unique challenges given the environments in which they operate. The consequences of stolen or compromised data could endanger the lives of the children and families they serve, making cybersecurity an integral part of their mission.
Recognizing these risks, when Gareth Packham became Director of Information Security & Data Protection, one of his key objectives was securing Save the Children’s email infrastructure by implementing DMARC. The organization required a solution that would prevent domain spoofing and protect outbound email communications. Given Save the Children’s global operations and the highly sensitive data they handle - such as refugee and medical information - ensuring the security of their systems was critical. As Packham put it, “If the sensitive data we handle were to fall into the wrong hands, it could put people at serious risk. That’s why we cannot afford any disruptions to our systems.” The right solution needed to protect against immediate threats and ensure long-term security as the organization scaled.
Additional pressure: Complying with Google and Yahoo’s bulk sender requirements
In addition to the need for a secure email infrastructure, Save the Children faced growing pressure to comply with the bulk sender requirements announced by Google and Yahoo in October 2023. These requirements mandate domain authentication for organizations sending more than 5,000 emails per day.
“The Google and Yahoo mandates were major business drivers for us to implement DMARC quickly. We rely on email communication for fundraising, coordination, and delivering vital information to both donors and program teams. If we didn’t meet these new standards, our email deliverability would be severely impacted, which could ultimately harm our ability to carry out our mission,” Packham explains.
With these mandates in mind, Save the Children sought a solution that could bring them into compliance quickly, while also providing long-term protection against cyber threats.
The solution: Red Sift OnDMARC
After reviewing several vendors, Save the Children chose Red Sift’s OnDMARC for its comprehensive DMARC, SPF, and DKIM management capabilities, as well as its industry-leading Customer Success.
“Compared to other vendors, Red Sift demonstrated a genuine desire to help us complete our work and push us over the line. Their pricing was incredibly competitive, and they offered exceptional support throughout the process,” notes Packham.
Key features that made Red Sift stand out:

OnDMARC automates and simplifies the management of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, including MTA-STS functionality, ensuring email security without manual intervention.

The solution provides both aggregate and forensic reports, giving Save the Children the visibility to identify and block spoofing attempts and unauthorized sending sources.
Scalability
OnDMARC is designed to handle a large number of domains, ensuring scalability to meet the evolving needs of Save The Children International and its stakeholder agencies.

Future-proofing email security for a global nonprofit
With Red Sift’s OnDMARC solution in place and ‘p=reject’ reached, Save the Children now has comprehensive protection for its email infrastructure. The organization can confidently detect and reject phishing attempts, spoofed emails, and unauthorized senders across its global network. Moreover, the solution has laid a solid foundation for future scalability as Save the Children continues to expand its digital operations.
“With OnDMARC, we have full control over our email security, and we know we have a partner in Red Sift to support us as our organization grows. Their commitment to helping us succeed has been priceless.”
